Live Review: Marvin The Martian At Stealth

image Marvin The Martian

Gig Date: 04 December 2007

Nottingham, Stealth

Signed to Universal's new label NoCarbon Records, Marvin The Martian has spent the summer in Bristol recording a new album, and has virtually toured with everyone in the UK underground scene and many others alike. He has supported acts such as Akala, Skinnyman, Gym Class Heroes and now the one-man-band Lethal Bizzle, or shall I say Lethal B.

After seeing Marvin live I won't be wrong in saying that Marvin The Martian is a more of a unique MC than his current headliner. Previously seeing Lethal B at the NTU Union Glo Bar for the UK Takeover I admired his manner with the crowd and ability to keep up the pace but that was when he performed nothing but 3 songs. On his own tour however he falls slightly short. He oozes potential and maybe it was the technical difficulties which held him back, which he didn’t handle too well. On the other hand Marvin The Martian, the support act, yes, the support act was more the headliner for me. An all round performer, a brillaint crowed pleaser and very lyrically talented, Mr Marvin is a solid slice of British Hip-Hop indicating a bright future.

As a potential unknown act to many on the night, he managed to grab the audience and was well recieved as a result. I didn't really know what to expect, it was a pleasant surprise, after Lethal B failed to impress. I find that his single 'Get By' is the type that eventually grows on you, and is better when perfomed live.

Expect big things from Marvin next year, could be year of the Martian.

I went to this gig and it was a waste of my money. Lethal was terrible. This guy Marvin is the only thing we can talk about the night. I still don't much about him but liked what he does.
