Signed to IGA’s Geffen Records (home to Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Pharrell and Common, to name a few), this 16-years-old, ex-boxer, St. Louis rapper known as Jibbs, has joined the latest trend of converting a nursery rhyme into a hip hop hit. Just like DJ Webstar & Young B’s “Chicken Noodle Soup”, Jibbs is also set to top the charts with this debut single “Chain Hang Low” taken from his first album: “Jibbs Featuring Jibbs”.
As Jibbs is the brother of DJ Beats from Da Beatstaz, who is the producer for Nelly and Chingy, it is quite clear that this single has more of a snap dance, St. Louis Nelly feel to it all. Staging the children singing, catchy redraft chorus, coming from “Do Your Ears Hang Low” song, the lyrics are unsurprisingly all about chains (instead of ears). The Remix, featuring Lil Wayne, Young Joc, Rich Boy & Lil Mont, is somewhat lyrically varied compared to the LP, yet, unfortunately, strictly bounds to the same musical formula.
Apart from supposedly being referred to as a “minstrel show rap” by a few individuals in the hip hop community, due to the chorus that originally featured on the minstrel show song “Turkey in the Straw” or “Zip Coon”, this single is barely aiming to raise too many eyebrows. Instead, settles for a swift party fix that claims to be ‘off the chain’.
