Ciara - Like A Boy
Released: April 2, 2007
Label: RCAWritten By: Aman Panglin
Rating: 5.5/10Produced by Calvo Da Gr8 and co-produced by CiCi herself, Like a Boy has a hard pounding hip hop beat complemented by synthesised orchestral strings. The beat is good. The song itself now is a different story.
The verses are mediocre, typical Ciara really. The lyrics in the verses are alightly on the strange side, it does sometimes seem as though she was just looking for a rhyme, specifically when she says “Take out the trash just like ‘em” (I wasn’t aware that blokes have a certain way of taking out the rubbish). Though the concept of the song is pretty interesting and some might say actually good, but Ciara had the opportunity here to make a surefire hit. The hook though is impressive, the chorus however lets it down.
The beat being so good, detracts from the song but will probably be the reason it becomes a chart success, the chorus though could have been much better. It is missing that certain oomph, (I would say x-factor, but that phrase has most certainly gone down the toilet). The beat gives the opportunity for an equally hard hitting chorus but Ciara remains in her comfort zone and feeds us the standard vocal we expect from her.
Though some might see the contrast of the beat and the vocals as a nice complement to one another, the entire song shouldn’t have been like that, she should’ve given that little bit more.
Overall, it’s nice to see Ciara try something a bit different with the concept but she should’ve gone the whole nine yards. Not bad, but not great either.
