Chipmunk abandons the mainstream for a grittier sound.

Diving straight in at number two on the charts, Chipmunk’s transition to a much darker sound proves to be working to great affect. Most artists usually cross-over to the mainstream with a commercial sound, however, UK rapper Chipmunk is doing the reverse after on-going criticism for his initial pop music.

Although they aren’t worlds apart, most would probably not think to team Chipmunk up with US singer Chris Brown. Nonetheless, this is one collaboration that definitely works well, and although not an amazing track, Champion is most certainly likeable.

Despite only featuring, Brown without a doubt owns the track, with his powerful and strong vocals giving Champion that slight R&B feel. While Chipmunk’s verses flow well, Brown’s talents have no bounds with the singer rapping as well.

It is easy to sympathise with Brown when he sings: “Award shows, I pour my heart out/and people still study tryna point my flaws out”, in regards to his difficulties in putting past dramas behind him. This brutal honesty is perhaps what makes Champion believable and that bit more relatable, as opposed to featuring generic lyrics.

Champion is a great springboard to propel both artists’ somewhat flailing careers back to the top of the charts.
