Beyonce: A Response to Jay-Z
With the re-release of B-Day accompanied by a video anthology, we not only get the typical Beyonce videos, one of the songs in particular stands out. Flaws and All, the video particularly, shows Beyonce as Beyonce opposed to her as her stage persona Sasha and the result is different, in a good way.
We have become, oh so used to Sasha working it on the stage (I know it kind of sounds ridiculous referring to her as a different person but hey, it works for her) but this video showcases a more vulnerable side to Beyonce. With the release of Jay-Z’s track ‘Lost Ones’ a verse specifically aimed at B went something like this:
“I don’t think it’s meant to be (B…)
For she loves her work more than she does me
And honestly at 23 I would probably love my work MORE than I did she
So we ain’t we, it’s me and her
Cause what she prefers over me is work
And that’s where we differ, so I have to give her
Free time…even if it hurts
So breathe, mami, it’s deserved
You’ve been put on this Earth to be all you can be like the Reserves
And me? My time in this army is served
So I have to allow she, HER, time to serve
The time’s now for her, in time she’ll mature
And maybe we can be we again, like we were
Finally, my time’s too short to share
And I ask her now it aint fair…
So yeah she lost one”
Flaws and All however could be seen as a response to this, as what she says goes a little something like this:
“I neglect you when I'm working
When I need attention
I tend to nag
I'm a host of imperfection
And you see past all that
I'm a peasant by some standards
But in yo eyes I'm a queen
You see potential in all my flaws (ha ha ha uh uh)
And that's exactly what I mean
I don't know why you love me
And that's why I love you”
What’s strange is that they’re usually quite secretive when it comes to their relationship but here is a blatant reference to one another. So, do you think this is a publicity stunt or are they actually just talking to each other through song? What happened to the days when people actually spoke?
