Chris Brown broke down in tears as he performed a tribute to Michael Jackson at a US awards show.

The R&B star sobbed his way through Man In The Mirror, following an impressive routine of Jacko-style dance moves.

Brown, who brutally assaulted ex-girlfriend Rihanna last year, wiped tears from his eyes and failed to sing the words live on stage at the BET Awards.

It is perhaps no coincidence that Jackson hit Man In The Mirror is about trying to change oneself before you can change the world.

The lyrics include the telling lines: “I’ve been a victim of a selfish kind of love… I’m starting with the man in the mirror. I’m asking him to change his ways.”

After an introduction by Jackson’s brother Jermaine, Brown wowed the audience by performing some of the pop star’s signature dance moves in a cleverly choreographed routine to The Way You Make Me Feel, Remember The Time, Smooth Criminal and Billie Jean.

But it was when he stepped out alone to sing Man In The Mirror that his composure disappeared.

Dressed in black trousers and a white T-shirt, the 21-year-old singer wept uncontrollably and relied on the audience to help him with the lyrics.
His shocking performance led US websites and blogs to question whether his emotions were genuine or a clever ploy to try to win over some of his critics.
