Ice Cube To Produce NWA Biopic
Ice Cube The Los Angeles group – which Rolling Stone ranked 83rd on its 100 Greatest Artists of All Time list – spawned the solo careers of Ice Cube and Dr Dre.
The movie Straight Outta Compton is named after the group’s 1988 hit and album of the same name.
Andrea Berloff – who wrote Oliver Stone's World Trade Centre – is reportedly working on the script, while Ice Cube, 40, now a successful actor, is producing the biopic along with the widow of deceased member Eazy-E.
Born in the urban ghetto of Compton, California in the mid-1980s, NWA (Niggaz With Attitude) consisted of Ice Cube, real name O'Shea Jackson, and Dr Dre, real name Andre Young.
Other members included DJ Yella, MC Ren and former drug-dealer Eazy-E, born Eric Wright, who died of complications from AIDS in 1995, at the age of 32.
The group had imploded four years before, however, due to rivalry and a clash of egos.
Ice Cube, who has four children with wife Kimberly Woodruff, left in 1990 over royalty disputes.
During their heyday, the group were widely criticised for their violent lyrics and were accused of promoting anti-Semitism, misogyny and homophobia.
The surviving members have since reconciled.
