Beyonce Knowles won a record-breaking six Grammy Awards last night.

The singer took home prizes for Song of the Year, R&B Song and R&B Vocal Performance for her song Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It). She also won the gong for Female Pop Vocal Performance for her hit Halo. Beyonce had been nominated for 10 awards and won six, setting a new record for the most wins by a female artist in one night.

The 28-year-old said her success made her “nervous”, before thanking her family and husband Jay-Z for their support.

“I'd love to thank my family for all of their support, including my husband. I love you," she said.

Beyonce was previously tied for the honour of most Grammy Award wins in one night. She, Alicia Keys, Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse and Alison Krauss had all won five awards in the past.

Taylor Swift was another big winner on the night. She took home four awards, including nods for Album of the Year, Best Country Album and Best Country Song. She was breathless when she climbed onstage to receive her first prize, expressing her shock before paying tribute to her mother and father.

"Oh wow! Thank you so much. I just hope that you know how much this means to me – that we get to take this back to Nashville," she said. “This is for my dad. Thank you for all those times you said I could do whatever I wanted in life. And to my mom, you're my best friend."

Michael Jackson’s eldest children Prince, 12, and Paris, 11, also participated in the ceremony. They accepted their late father’s Lifetime Achievement Award, making a short speech about the pop superstar’s legacy.

"Through all his songs, our father's message was simple: love," Prince said. "We will continue to spread his message and help the world,” Paris added.

"We are proud to accept this award on behalf of our father," Prince continued. "We'd like to thank God for watching over us for these past seven months and our grandma and grandpa for their love and support. We would also like to thank the fans; our father loved you so much because you were always there for him."

Paris ended the speech, saying: "Thank you. We love you, Daddy."

Keith Urban, the Kings of Leon, the Black Eyed Peas, Rihanna, Jay-Z, Kanye West and Lady Gaga also won awards at the ceremony which was held at Los Angeles’ Staples Center.
