Is Rihanna Losing Her Accessibility?
From pop princess to Street Hood, is Rihanna's transformation gone a bit too far left field?
Rihanna has come a long way since gracing our ears with hits such as 'Pon De Replay' and 'If It's Lovin' That You Want' back in mid 2005 but since her dramatic transformation she seems to be continuing to pull away from her mainstream pop image sparking fears she may be losing her accessibility to her younger fans.
Most recently Rihianna has reportedly outraged music bosses back at Def Jam with her raunchy photo shoot for GQ January 2010 cover for being too steamy and prior to that Rhianna's last album cover was that of her dressed in nothing much else than barbed wire.
If we take a look at her music Rhianna has gone from the soft poppy sing along sounds of 'Umbrella' to the more intense sounds of 'Russian Roulette'. The songstress is also teaming up with artists to produce songs where bad language seems second to none, perhaps not appropriate for the vast majority of young Rihanna fans.
So is it time for another makeover or more appropriately make-under in order to win back her younger fans or should we just accept that an artist grows and explores different tastes and sounds. Beyonce has managed to maintain her edge whilst still conveying a very pop mainstream R&B look and sound, so perhaps Rihianna should look for inspiration in how to manage the two.
