Wyclef Jean has acknowledged that running for the Haitian presidency carries the potential threat of assassination, but he is not perturbed.

The former Fugees star, who last week announced his bid for his native country's top job, said he is preparing to visit the camps and slums of the Caribbean nation.

The 37-year-old musician will be travelling with a dozen bodyguards, admitting there are dangers to his personal safety in a county with a history of political violence.

"You have two choices, either sit back thinking of the danger or do something to move your country forward," Jean said.

"Assassination is always a possibility but I'd rather die trying to achieve something than die doing nothing. I'm telling you right now, brother, I'm going to fight for the rights of the Haitian people so they can get their justice."

Jean was born in Haiti, but moved to the United States when he was nine. The earthquake-ravaged nation's young people have inspired him to stand for office, the Express reports.
