Aretha Franklin has revealed that she is so afraid of flying that she once turned down the chance to sing for the Queen.

In an interview with US Glamour magazine, the 68-year-old Say A Little Prayer singer – who this week had to cancel two free concerts after falling and breaking two of her ribs – advises readers to overcome their fears.

The Queen of Soul says: "Do conquer your fears.

"I turned down two singing opportunities in my career because of a fear of flying: one for the Queen of England and one at the pyramids.

"But I'm going to sail the Nile one day. I'm on my way."

Franklin also advises readers in the September issue that they shouldn't have sex with a man until they know him.

"Don't get intimate before you know the guy," the twice-married divorcee says.

"Take the time to see whether you're compatible before you invest your time and your heart."

She added: "My new album [Aretha: A Woman Falling Out Of Love] is about a relationship that didn't work out.

“We realised we're better friends than lovers."
