Wyclef Jean is expected to announce he will run for President of Haiti tomorrow.

Former senior politician Pierre Eric Jean-Jacques has claimed the musician will be involved in the November elections in the country, which was hit by a devastating earthquake earlier this year. Wyclef - who was born on the Caribbean island, but grew up in the Brooklyn area of New York after moving there as a child - has been instrumental in raising funds for those affected by the natural disaster.

A spokeswoman for Wyclef has revealed the star is planning to make an announcement in Haiti, but refused to reveal any more details.

It has been reported the 37-year-old could confirm his presidential bid on US chat show Larry King Live tomorrow after he has arrived in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince.

Wyclef has confirmed his intentions to be involved in running his country to Time.com, saying: “If not for the earthquake, I probably would have waited another ten years before doing this. If I can’t take five years out to serve my country as President… then everything I’ve been singing about, like equal rights, doesn’t mean anything.”

Rumours the former Fugees musician was poised to embark on a career in politics have been circulating for months and his family recently revealed he was considering running for presidency.

Jean-Jacques says Wyclef will be put forward as a candidate for a new coalition called Ansanm Nou Fo, which in Creole means ‘together we are strong’.

Anyone intending to run for President of Haiti must file their candidacy application by Saturday.
