Ricky Gervais finds it impossible to exaggerate Hollywood
Ricky Gervais Ricky Gervais thinks it's impossible to exaggerate the state of Hollywood at the moment.
The comedian and writer has spoofed the celebrity culture in TV shows Extras and Life's Too Short.
He told the Hollywood Reporter: "If The Office sort of reflected those quaint docu‑soaps of the '90s where normal people were getting their 15 minutes, this is much more up-to-date.
"This is much more those things where people do anything just to be on television, open the doors 24/7 because they've got a massive tax bill or their agent thinks they can make a fast buck and sell a perfume.
But speaking about Life's Too short, which follows a fictionalised version of dwarf actor Warwick Davies, Gervais said there is a positive side to what is portrayed in the series.
Gervias said: "I find it bizarre that people are surprised with some of our happy endings, and I think we still leave a flavour of cynicism and outrage. Warwick has a seven‑part trajectory to this. Even this nasty little fascist sees the light."
Gervais hosts the Golden Globes on Sunday night (January 15) following his controversial turn last year, but played down the reaction of last year's comments: "I’d rather they laugh than gasp, but I cherish the gasps along with the laughs. Everyone took it well... (they) were cool with it."
