Lily Allen Thought She Was Going To Hell When She Was Little
Lily Allen thought she was going to hell when she was nine because her mother lied to get her into a Catholic school.
The singer had a varied educational life, estimating she went to around 13 or 14 different schools. Her favourites were two Catholic learning facilities; particularly one she went to when was nine.
Lily’s mother was keen to give her kids the best education possible, so told school staff her daughter had been confirmed when she hadn’t. The 25-year-old laughs about it now, but found the deception harrowing at the time.
“I can’t remember how it goes but I think you have your christening and then you have your first communion and then you’re supposed to have your confirmation,” she explained. “I hadn’t had my confirmation, but my mother had lied on the form and said I had so I remember we had to get up in church and eat the body of Christ and drink the wine and I thought I was going to hell because I hadn’t been confirmed. I used to say to my mum, ‘We have to be honest about this, I feel like I’m going to hell because I ate the body of Christ.’ She said, ‘Darling, if you feel that guilty you are definitely Catholic.’”
Lily has previously said she found being at Catholic school strange as she didn’t agree with a lot of what she was taught. Teachers preached about homosexuality being a sin, but her parents were friends with lots of gay people.
Despite this, she liked the school. Lily chose to ignore things she was taught if she didn’t agree with them, instead focusing on the aspects she liked.
“Both the Catholic Schools went to I enjoyed immensely, they were probably my favourite. They were very protective, nurturing and caring of us,” she said on British television show Lily Allen: In Confidence. “It was particularly during a difficult time at home when my mum was going through a lot of struggles and my dad wasn’t around much. The teachers were very aware of what was going on and really looked out for us and that felt nice.”
