Kate Winslet Ended Her Marriage As They "Grew Apart"
Kate Winslet The couple announced they were splitting after almost seven years of marriage on Monday, insisting it was an amicable decision taken by both of them. The pair added they had parted ways earlier this year.
It has been claimed their marriage hit a rocky patch after they made 2008 film Revolutionary Road together. They tried hard to make it work for the sake of the two children they raise together, but eventually took the decision to split after realising they were no longer happy.
“In fact, a source tells us the couple ‘just grew apart,’ ” reports People magazine. “Winslet stuck with the relationship for a while for the children, but Mendes's tendency to be a workaholic is one of the reasons the couple split. They separated in January, but decided to keep it quiet until after the Oscars.”
It has been claimed part of the reason for the break-up was Sam’s friendship with actress Rebecca Hall, who he has worked with on several projects. Kate was said to be uncomfortable with the amount of time the pair were spending together, although there was no suggestion of any impropriety.
Sam’s representative has insisted rumours of any romantic relationship are “ridiculous”.
Kate, 34, and Sam, 44, lived in New York, but no longer share a home. However, it has been reported Sam is still living in the same block as his estranged partner.
Kate is said to be considering moving back to England following the split, as she wants to be close to her family. “Kate is in meltdown mode and doesn't know quite what to do,” a source told British newspaper The Daily Mail. “The people she's close to in New York are mums in schools but she thinks that will all change. Kate feels she needs a support system, but she is torn because doesn't want to disrupt her kids and is able to be very low key in New York.”
It has also been alleged Kate decided to end the marriage after Sam admitted he couldn’t see himself in just one relationship for the rest of his life. Although there is no suggestion he wanted to get romantically involved with someone else, Kate is said to have been upset that he could contemplate not being with her in the future.
“Sam had been really withdrawn and had shut himself away from her,” a source told the newspaper. “They then had this big talk and he told her, ‘People can’t be inspired by just one relationship. For me, it’s never going to be about one relationship… life is a series of relationships.’ Kate told him, ‘For me it is, that’s what I want’, but Sam replied, ‘Well, that’s not what I want.’ They both knew the marriage could not go on, it was hopeless. Kate did not want to break up, she had been trying her best to keep things together for months, but in the end it was just too much.”
Kate and Sam began dating shortly after her divorce from Jim Threapleton, and they married in May 2003 on the Caribbean island of Anguilla. They raise their six-year-old son Joe and Kate’s daughter with Jim Mia Honey, nine.
