The music mogul is believed to have proposed to his partner Mezhgan Hussainy on Valentine’s Day last month.

He had previously insisted he would never settle down or have a family, but has admitted his relationship with Mezhgan made him rethink his priorities.

“Well, I do have somebody in my life now Jay, yes,” he said, when quizzed about the marriage rumours by US talk show host Jay Leno. “And I kinda made a decision this year to make somebody happy so that's how I… it's called giving back. I'm kind of torn because I'm a bit too old to have kids, but then again I think it would be important to have a lot of me’s around in the future.”

When Jay pressed Simon on more details about the engagement, the famously acid-tongued talent show judge got embarrassed. Blushing bright red, he was uncomfortable when quizzed about the giant diamond ring Mezhgan is now wearing.

“I was asleep I think,” he joked. “No, look, I bought her the ring in London.”

The 50-year-old was evasive about the details of the proposal, and would only say the nuptials were planned for some time in the next ten years. The couple are yet to decided whether they will wed in the US or UK, with Simon inviting Jay to be a flower girl.

Jay later spotted make-up artist Mezhgan in the audience, and invited her on stage. She gladly joined her beau, sandwiching herself into the chair next to him, and giving him a kiss.

Simon also spoke about his decision to leave American Idol, insisting the time is right for him to move on. The current series of the show will be his last, and he is planning to bring UK talent programme The X Factor Stateside.

There have been repeated rumours Simon and new American Idol judge Ellen DeGeneres don’t get on, but Simon insists they aren’t true. “We get on fine. We don't see each other before the show, we do the show. Sometimes we agree, sometimes we disagree, but I did take it quite personally when she moved away from me, yes,” he explained.

“I talk to Paula Abdul all the time. She was great fun and it is a different show without her; but, you know, something will happen with me and her at some point.”
