Gemma Arterton Fears She Isn't Pretty Enough
Gemma Arterton fears she isn’t pretty enough to make it in Hollywood.
The British actress shot to fame playing Strawberry Fields in Quantum of Solace and even though she landed a role as a Bond girl, she still doubts her looks match up to her acting ability. However, the brunette accepts striking beauty can hold you back in the movie industry and limit the roles you are considered for.
“In comparison to many actresses I think I’m really average. When I got the Bond film there was this big hoo-ha about me not being hot enough. Like, ‘Why her?’ I have to say, I agree. I don’t think I’m in that realm,” Gemma said in an interview with GQ magazine. “But I think in a way it might have helped me along. There are some really beautiful actresses, like Olga Kurylenko who find it difficult. It’s frustrating for her because she’s so beautiful that it’s like someone having a massive nose: you are going to take that into consideration when you’re casting her. Whereas I can change my look: I can look plain or I can be all dolled up.”
The 24-year-old star can next be seen in action movies Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Clash of the Titans. Although Gemma is thrilled to be appearing in such high-profile films, she doesn’t want to be typecast and is keen to experiment with different movie genres. She is hopeful that starring in box office blockbusters will lead to other opportunities.
“There is this realistic, business side to me and I think that’s informed my career a lot. You have to be savvy. You need to be a known actress to get the really good parts, so you need to make sure you’re in something that people see. Then hopefully you get the chance to have the creativity later,” she explained. “You might get pigeonholed and recently I’ve been worrying if my career is going the way I planned it. I hope people don’t just see me as a Bond girl. I hope they’ll soon see my work and think differently.”
