The remaining members of Boyzone told Stephen Gately they loved him every day.
Ronan Keating, Mikey Graham, Shane Lynch and Keith Duffy were devastated by their bandmate’s unexpected death last October. They console themselves with the fact that they spent much of the past three years enjoying “fantastic times” with him after the band reunited in 2007.
“I’m glad we had those three years,” Ronan said. “We are very lucky.”
“I’d hate to think what we’d feel like now if we hadn’t had that time together,” Shane added. “It would have been horrible – an everlasting nightmare.
“We have great peace in the fact that we had some fantastic times over the past few years. There was nothing left unsaid. Stephen knew how much he was loved – we were always telling him.”
Boyzone formed in 1993 but split up in 2000. They reunited seven years later and went on to enjoy success with comeback album Back Again.
Stephen died his home on the Spanish island of Majorca from acute pulmonary oedema, or a rapid build-up of fluid in the lungs. He was 33 years old.
