Ricky Gervais Refused To Attend His Best Friend’s Birthday Party

They have collaborated on dozens of projects, including hit UK TV series The Office, but refuse to socialise outside of business hours because Ricky is convinced it will make their comedy stale.
“We’re close, but we don’t live in bunk beds,” he explained to Empire magazine. “We’re obviously friends, we’re really good friends, but I think it’s good we don’t socialise or live in each other’s pockets otherwise we’d get in a rut.
“If you’re writing together for 50 years and you go on holiday together and go to each other’s wedding you’re going to churn out the same stuff.”
Stephen agrees with Ricky in theory, but was still a bit miffed when the star refused to come to his recent birthday party.
“I had a birthday party and sent Ricky a message saying, ‘Just to let you know, I’m having a birthday party on Saturday and I know you won’t come,’ and he wrote back saying, ‘Thanks for the invite, I’ll see you on Monday.’ ”
