Julia Roberts Used To Hunt For Paparazzi Hiding In Trees
Julia Roberts The actress became an overnight sensation when she starred in Pretty Woman in 1990. By the time she filmed Runaway Bride nine years later, she was so famous photographers would shimmy up trees to try to get a shot of her in her breaks between scenes.
“The paparazzi weren’t sure who she was when we did Pretty Woman so we didn’t get a lot of them around the set,” director Garry Marshall told Total Film magazine. “But when we did Runaway Bride, that was the most paparazzi I’ve ever had.
“They were always there, even up in the trees! We would lean over and hug, Julia and I. She would put her forehead on my forehead. Someone asked, ‘What is it you say to her?’ I said, ‘Nothing, she’s just looking for paparazzi in the trees!’ ”
Garry gave a 20-year-old Julia her first role, as prostitute Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman. There were hundreds of girls trying out for the part, but Garry claims even the security guards could see Julia was a star in the making.
“When I saw her turn up on film and that smile light it up… it wasn’t just me – I think the gate guard knew she was going to be a star!”
