Oprah Winfrey has announced she will donate $6 million to help troubled US schools.

The talk show host has devoted two days of her programme, The Oprah Winfrey Show, to the problem of education in America.

She revealed on Monday’s broadcast that the money will be going to six educational organisations in the US to help make public schooling better.

The donation is the largest amount of money ever given by the star’s Angel Network charity organisation.

The organisations to receive the money are based in Philadelphia, California, Colorado, Illinois, Louisiana and Texas, with Oprah’s charity calling them all "ground-breaking leaders in the provision of quality public education."

On yesterday’s show the star welcomed a panel of education reform advocates including Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Davis Guggenheim, who has directed a film following five children who enter a lottery to gain a place at a top US school.

Oprah is one of America’s biggest philanthropists, and since launching the Angel Network in 1998 she has raised millions of dollars for numerous non-profit organisations across the globe.
