Catherine Zeta-Jones has revealed she is “furious” with doctors for failing to spot her husband Michael Douglas’ cancer earlier.

Michael announced he has throat cancer last month, and has opened up about his diagnosis in a series of television and magazine interviews. He has stage four cancer, and is currently in his first week of an eight-week treatment cycle. The 65-year-old actor is undergoing intensive radiation and chemotherapy, and doctors are confident he will make a full recovery.

However, Catherine believes the disease could have been detected earlier because Michael had been complaining of pain in his ear and throat. The walnut sized tumour was only discovered under his tongue a few weeks ago and the cancer has now spread to his neck and other parts of his head.

“It makes me furious they didn't detect it earlier,” she said in an interview with People magazine. “He sought every option and nothing was found.”

The 40-year-old beauty admits she was expecting bad news when they sought other medical advice and further tests were carried out. Catherine has revealed Michael also realised he wasn’t well and had prepared himself for the results.

“It wasn't a huge shock,” she said about the diagnosis. “I knew something was up. He knew something was up.”

Michael remains philosophical about his late diagnosis. He has vowed to remain positive, previously revealing he has an 80% of survival.

“These things sometimes just don't show up,” he said.
