Maggie Gyllenhaal says her heart was “ripped open” when she became a mother.

The actress has three-year-old daughter Ramona with her husband Peter Sarsgaard, and says she was totally unprepared for how much love she would feel for the tot when she was born. It was an experience unlike any other, and one the actress cherishes.

“I just didn't have a clue. I don't think that's something you can know. There's no way to prepare for the challenges, the immense joys, the surprises, the disappointments and the shocks,” she said. “Your heart just rips open. It's amazing.”

The 32-year-old says motherhood has impacted every area of her life, including her work. She thinks her acting ability has improved since she gave birth to Ramona, and she is determined to keep growing in the profession.

I do think I’m a better person because of motherhood, but it's hard to tell. Being a mother is such a big part of my life now,” she told The Orange County Register. “I am a better actress. I don't know in what way, but I am. Of course, part of it is just getting older. I might be a better actress now because of that. From 28 to 32 are important growing years. I think motherhood does remind you how out of control you can be. Maybe that's it.”
