The 64-year-old actor/director is one of Hollywood’s most celebrated stars, and his latest project The Expendables has been hailed as the action movie event of the summer.

Written by and starring Sylvester, it tells the story of a group of mercenaries hired to infiltrate a South American country and overthrow its dictator and features some particularly gruesome sequences.

He admits the movie is extremely violent, but insists he always makes sure he writes scripts to punish any male characters that inflict violence on females.

He says he makes sure men who hurt women in his movies suffer in the most gruesome way possible as he thinks that killing them off quickly with a gun would be too easy.

"If I have a man tearing a woman apart and threatening her life and then I just shoot him with a bullet - that's too civilised. He's going to feel real pain. I don't feel guilty about it at all," the star explained.

Sylvester reunited some of the biggest action stars of the 80s for the film, including Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Relative newcomer Jason Statham, best known for starring in Crank and The Transporter, plays a former SAS knife-wielding expert.

He revealed that all the movie’s stars left their egos at the door and gave their full respect to Sylvester.

"Everyone has such a respect for Sly, so no-one's trying to be cool or flash. Everyone's just looking up to him as he's the man who's steering the ship," he gushed.
