Jordin Sparks: I’m clumsy
Jordin Sparks The talented star will make her stage debut this week in the hit musical In the Heights, in New York’s famous Broadway theatre district.
In the show Jordin plays Nina, a working-class girl who is the first of her family to go away to college, only to later return home with bad news. It is the first time R&B star Jordin has performed in a musical, and she has had to learn complex dance routines for the part. The gifted singer says she isn’t naturally very graceful so has had to work extra hard to master the choreography.
“There's this club scene where I have to do this salsa move. I'm naturally clumsy, so I've been falling all over myself trying to get it right," she confessed to USA Today.
Jordin, 20, went on to talk more about Nina, and revealed she found it easy to relate to the character’s nervousness. Jordin shot to fame when she won talent competition American Idol in 2007 at the tender age of 17, but says she too worries about living up to people’s expectations.
"Nina is back from her first year at college. And things didn't go as well as she had thought they were going to. She is the girl who always did everything perfect. And now she has to tell them what happened," explained Jordin.
"I know what it's like to have that anxiety of 'Omigosh, I didn't do as well as I wanted to on that paper,' or 'I missed a line in that song.' "
Jordin says she is especially anxious about opening night as her entire family will be in the audience to support her and celebrate her mother’s birthday. But she says she is hoping she will forget all her worries once she’s on stage.
"It'll probably go by so fast that I won't even remember any of it," she added.
