The star is known for shocking with his often violent brand of rock music, but doesn’t party like he used to. The rocker is happily married with three grown-up children and decided to give up his heavy drinking almost three decades ago.

Cooper realised he needed to substitute alcohol with something else in a bid to beat his addiction and found playing 18 holes of golf helped him cope. The 62-year-old plays so often he has an impressive handicap of 2 and has joked he would like to be considered for a spot on the American Ryder Cup team when they take on Europe this October.

“I quit drinking 29 years ago and I took up golf as a substitute,” Cooper said in an interview with the BBC. “I play every day. That is my addiction now.”

When asked if he would like to be selected for the Ryder Cup, he laughed and replied, “Yeah, I might be the guy!”

Cooper also went on to discuss the Halloween shows he is planning in the UK later this year. The 62-year-old heavy metal rocker recently held auditions to find “totally weird freaks” to perform at the concerts and admits even he was shocked by some of the acts who tried out.

“I wouldn’t do some of that stuff. A few times at the auditions I had to look away, it was too much even for me,” he revealed. “London needs more Halloween. It just needs more and I thought, ‘There’s got to be people out there who are freaky enough to be on my show and we found them.’”

Cooper will play two “special and unique” shows at the Roundhouse in London on October 31 and November 1. He will be supported by Jim Rose, Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction, along with other acts to make his concerts extra-terrifying.
