Anjelica Huston: I Resented Nicholson’s Success

Anjelica Huston says she couldn’t help “resenting” Jack Nicholson during their 17-year relationship.

The 59-year-old actress dated the iconic actor on and off from 1973 to 1990. They lived together for much of that period and Anjelica admits it was not easy to co-habit with such a famous man.

While she was often struggling to get work, Jack was swamped with offers and it caused a lot of tension in their relationship.

“I was overshadowed by him,” Anjelica told Empire magazine. “Resentment would come up. You know, all the phone calls were for him and all the scripts that came through the door were for him, all the books and proposals. That’s a losing game, to be a competitor in that atmosphere.”

The attention Jack got everywhere he went also made his relationship with Anjelica difficult. She found it hard to deal with their busy lifestyle, but still looks back on their time together fondly.

“Sometimes it was wonderful and sometimes not,” she explained. “He was great company: sharp, very astute, very amusing. He loves people, loves to talk, he’s very gregarious but he’s also a very private man and often difficult to be with, mainly because of the sheer intensity of the attention he caused.

“Just the way people reacted to him and the people who surrounded him. There was generally a crowd of people who moved around us wherever we went. It was a busy life.”
