Leonardo DiCaprio Reveals Inception Inspiration
The 35-year-old actor can next be seen in big-budget science fiction film Inception, in which he plays a man paid to steal people’s dreams. His character, Cobb, is a father who has been separated from his children and to gain an understanding of his emotions, Leonardo laughingly claims he got a string of women pregnant in different parts of the world.
"It helped in preparation that I went and had a lot of illegitimate children around the world,” the star said in an interview with British newspaper The Independent. “Look, it's just our job to immerse ourselves in situations and characters we're not necessarily familiar with. I love these sorts of challenges."
Leonardo accepts the cerebral concepts tackled in his new movie were tough to get to grips with. The Hollywood heartthrob admits he didn’t have a clue what the script was about when he first read through it, but believes it is important for moviegoers to be challenged to think for themselves. Leonardo prefers watching films that leave him with questions he has to answer for himself or discuss with friends afterwards.
“I don't even believe you even have to understand it. I didn't understand the script at first,” he explained. “Films should make you extract your own meaning or have different interpretations of an ending. Sometimes you have to surrender your desire to understand everything. Some things will always be uncertain. And isn't all this part of the experience of going to see a film?
“When it's done properly and you don't lose the audience, I think they are completely engaged and happy to unlock some of the answers. If I go to a film and there's no discussion after, that makes me think it's pretty sh*ty."
