Russell Brand: I Over-Reacted After Football Match
Russell Brand The British comedian is a huge football fan, and has looked forward to watching the prestigious event, being held in South Africa, for months. He was thrilled when England were drawn in the same group as America for the opening stages as he was sure they would win, but was horrified when the two teams eventually drew.
“I enjoy the festival of football, but if you were to examine it objectively it’s not been an especially good world cup. Our result against the USA was a little bit disappointing but I think we all over-reacted massively,” he explained. “I was in Australia when I saw it and I did that thing which I really hate when other people do it, I became a bit serious. I became earnest. And I loathe myself when I become earnest. Afterwards, Americans were texting me saying, ‘I thought you were supposed to be good at this game buddy, shouldn’t you be 3 0 up?’ I just replied, ‘F**k you you f**kers.’”
Although England are now out of the tournament, Russell went to great lengths to ensure he would be able to watch all their matches. He is currently promoting his new movie Get Him to the Greek, but stipulated in his contract that he doesn’t have to give interviews when his team are playing.
“I don’t have to do any promotional work during an England match. Also, if England had got into the semi-finals then Arthur, the next movie I’m making, would have had to stop filming so I could go. And that would have cost them a lot of money,” he said during an interview on UK television. “They agreed to it at a point when they didn’t realise I was serious and that it might happen.”
