I'm sure we've all read the less than enthusiastic reviews from the media at large on this release. But how does it fare once the record's had a chance to sink in a little?
On the surface, this really is nothing special. A few shallow pop songs about rainbows and butterflies and what sounds like a cheap rip-off of Gwen Stefani and the Black Eyed Peas. But wait, what's that behind the gloss? Dirty synth conjuring up a haute-couture dancefloor, quirky noise, and infectious beats. Songs such as “Heart Beat Rock” and “Nu-di-ty” take on a parody-yet-mastery angle, “Wow” is unashamedly cheesy, and “In My Arms” is reminiscent of the techno-cool of Fever.
There is no one style on this album – it serves as an overview of her career gone by, but carries itself with 'learned' undertones. This is perhaps her least sexy album, but it expresses something of a Marilyn Monore personality as a result. It is shallow and fun, and at the same time intersting and complex. Give it another try and it will surprise you.
