Guns N' Roses named Tour of the Year in Ultimate Classic Rock Awards
Guns N' Roses Guns N’ Roses’ first US tour in 5 years has seen them crowned 2011 Tour of the Year in the Ultimate Classic Rock Awards. The first of what is to be an annual awards ceremony saw GN'R stealing 32% of over 230,000 votes, the band beating out competition from the likes of Rush and Mötley Crüe to take the top prize.
The rockers’ 27-dates saw them zigzag across the US, beginning in Orlando, and drawing to a close with two Las Vegas shows to see in the New Year. The tour was not without its controversies; shows in Albany and Southaven were cancelled with little explanation, while a Vancouver date saw volatile singer Axl Rose eject a fan early into the set.
Former GN’R bassist Duff McKagan and his band Loaded supported Guns on some dates, even joining his former band mate onstage to perform some of the classic tunes he helped write during the band’s heyday: Civil War and You Could Be Mine.
Two nights of the tour were available for some time to view on live-streaming website iClips, although the service was marred by technical glitches which led some angry fans to demand reimbursement.
In early November, lead singer Axl Rose sat down for his first TV interview in almost two decades, speaking to That Metal Show about the current line-up, tour and the band’s controversial past.
