Tom DeLonge gets songwriting 'stupor'
Blink-182 The vocalist-and-guitarist is a member of popular punk band Blink-182 – also comprising of Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker. Tom left the band in early 2005, sending the group into indefinite hiatus. Blink-182 eventually reunited in February 2009 and their sixth studio album Neighborhoods is out this month.
Tom didn’t realise the lyrics on the record were so “dark” until bandmate Mark pointed it out.
“Yeah I didn’t know it until five days ago when people started claiming it was super dark. I said ‘Really?’ And Mark said, ‘F**k yeah, listen, listen to what you just wrote about.’ Then he listed off all the times we’d said the word ‘death’ and I thought, Oh my God. I didn’t realise.’ Isn’t that weird?” he mused in an interview with Kerrang! magazine.
“It’s kinda like you’re typing a novel and as you’re going through it, you’re living in the moment on the page. But by the time you finish that last page, you read it and go ‘What was I thinking?’ It’s almost like you’re in a drunken stupor one night and you don’t really realise what you’ve written until you’ve read it.”
Blink-182 gained popularity for their irreverent sense of humour. Tom says Neighborhoods somewhat turns its back on such lyrics.
“What happened to the d**k jokes?” he laughed. “I had a couple of ideas for d**k jokes, but we didn’t have the time...”
