Jon Bon Jovi is to planning to open a special community restaurant in  Monmouth Street, New Jersey, as part of his Soul Foundation.

According to Asbury Park Press, Jovi filed his request to turn an old auto repair shop into a 'pay what you can' diner - which will serve low to no cost meals to locals - last month.

The four-table restaurant and kitchen will be run by volunteers.

The scheme hopes those who can afford to pay will be donating money towards another person's.

"This is operated just like a restaurant. People can bring their families, they have a selection of items and have options to pay cash or volunteer," executive director Mimi Box told the newspaper.

The foundation grew interested in the concept after NBC broadcasted a feature about a similar community restaurant in Denver. That restaurant was based on one in Salt Lake City and foundation officials contacted them to learn more about its operation.

"It caught our attention because of the social aspect, there are no prices on the menus and everyone can eat there and they serve healthy, nutritious food," Box said. "Each has subtle differences, but at the root of them all lies the concept that everyone, no matter what their status, should have the ability to eat nutritiously."
