Dame Shirley has actually broken Elvis’ longevity record with this latest album becoming the first artist with a career spanning more than 50 years. It has been 10 years since her last album; “Get this party started” combines new recordings, new vocals and remixes. The first single off the album “The living tree” was released as she celebrated her 70th birthday.
The 12-track album starts with a cover of Pinks “Get this party started” which is absolutely brilliant. Her soulful take on Pinks single actually fronted the Christmas M&S advert. She has made the song her own and done so very well and for that I think this is probably my favourite song off the album!
I won’t go through all the songs or this will be a pretty long review but I shall mention a few of the best. For example track two, “Big Spender” is incredibly cool and up to this point I was able to sing along with the songs first time listening to them =] I like singing along to songs, so it made me smile. This track has been remixed since the original and I am not sure if it is better than the first or not as good but have decided after going to listen to the original this has definitely been created with her audience in mind with the dance beat etc.
On top of that I think time has done her voice an awful lot of good! Her voice is even bigger and even stronger! Wow. I’m somewhat thrown back by how good she is –
The album ends with “I will survive” which you never know may be subtly hinting she has no intention of going away, hanging around as the artist in the charts for the longest period of time.
I totally see Dame Shirley’s new album being played in gay clubs and maybe a few straight clubs everywhere. Its very dance-to-able and a drunk would be much entertained trying to sing along and keep up with her amazingly powerful voice.
