Jade Ewen spent hours learning Sugababes songs when she joined the band, only to discover she’d been given the wrong album.

The singer joined the British girlband last year after founding member Keisha Buchanan was asked to leave. She admits she was nervous about performing with the group’s other members Heidi Range and Amelle Berrabah at first, so decided to spend as much time as possible perfecting their songs. The Sugababes manager told her to learn the group’s new album, the soon to be released Sweet 7, first, but accidentally gave her a set of tracks which hadn’t made the final cut.

“I learnt the wrong album – our manager gave me the songs we weren’t using,” Jade laughed. “I spent ages doing it, I learnt about 20 songs and we weren’t doing them! I found learning the new stuff easier, the old stuff was hard. I’ve been singing along for years, and I realised I was singing the wrong words for all that time! We do shows and the fans know the words better than you do and I worry I’ll mess up!”

Jade, 22, was asked to join the band after things came to a head when Keisha, Amelle and Heidi were working in Los Angles. Heidi and Amelle told label bosses they no longer wanted to be in the band due to certain “treatment” they refuse to discuss. Their label eventually told the pair they wanted them to remain in the group, and drafted in Jade to join them.

It wasn’t the first time the band’s line-up had changed – founding members Siobhan Donaghy and Mutya Buena have also left - and Jade admits she was nervous rumours of nastiness and in-fighting would be true. However, any fears she had were allayed as soon as she met Amelle and Heidi.

“The day I found out I was in the band, I woke up and there was this crazy women shouting through my letterbox. It was our manager and she said if wanted to be in band I had to pack my bags and come to Los Angeles to join the girls now,” Jade told UK programme This Morning. “I didn’t know what had happened at time, that Amelle and Heidi had left, I thought maybe just Amelle had because it had been everywhere that she was unhappy. I was really worried on the plane, I was just thinking, ‘What if they don’t like me?’ We hit it off straight away, we had pancakes and it was fine.”

Jade Ewen is a good singer, but the Sugababes will never be the same without Keisha, it seems like Sugababes is more like a brand and has changed completely. Jade should be solo and the Sugababes should be the same again.
