Susan Boyle has an extra reason to celebrate this Christmas - her debut album has been named the highest-selling record of 2009.

The Scottish singer, who shot to fame on reality TV show Britain's Got Talent, topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic with her first offering, I Dreamed a Dream, which has sold more than five million copies worldwide since its release in November.

And now the record has been named Britain's best-selling album of the year just four weeks after its release.

According to the Official Charts Company, Boyle's disc has notched up sales of more than 1.4 million in Britain so far, putting the star ahead of competitors including Lady Gaga, whose own debut, The Fame, has spent 49 weeks in the charts.

Kings of Leon's Only By The Night was third in the best-sellers list, followed by Michael Buble's Crazy Love and the Black Eyed Peas' The End in fourth and fifth place respectively.

Official Charts Company spokesman Martin Talbot says, "In just four weeks Susan Boyle has become the biggest album artist in the U.K. by some margin - an extraordinary achievement for an artist who was totally unknown until April."

bsolutely fabulous. Kudos and cheers to you, Susan Boyle. You deserve every iota of your success. Those who truly love and support you vote with their feet and their pockets, the very envy of those celebrities who mock you, make fun of you (like Sharon Osbourne and the radio network broadcasters in the US), call you names like "retard" (Paul Henry and his employers who did not sack him and thereby condone this) or think that every person should look like Britney Spears, Madonna or blonde fakes like British Amanda Holden who hanged on your coat tails to get her job in the US and name drop your name to get a restaurant reservation then the cheek turns around on Chatty Man and ridicule the way you dress and look.
