Live Review: Ellie Goulding – V Festival 2010
Ellie Goulding Topping the BBC’s Sound of 2010 list, as well as being awarded the Critics’ Choice prize at the BRIT Awards. Not to mention a chart-topping album and top-ten singles.
So it’s not a huge surprise then, to find the tent packed full of fans, already chanting lyrics at the empty stage before Goulding’s due to perform. The singer finally entered the stage, coyly saying a quick ‘’hello’’, before launching into the first few songs.
Her success seems almost a surprise to her. “I just want to thank you all for coming”, she announced, grinning at the crowd before her. “Everyone put your hands up”, she cried, “Wow. That’s amazing.” The set list included most of the tracks from her album Lights, including ‘Guns And Horses’, and obvious crowd pleasers in the form of singles ‘The Writer’ and ‘Under The Sheets’.
The singer chatted easily with the audience, explaining the inspiration for a couple of tracks; ‘Your Biggest Mistake’ written after having her heart broken, followed by ‘Salt Skin’ – “after I ran away from him”.
Ellie seemed to be enjoying herself, owning the stage and involving herself in some drumming. Towards the end of the set, she paused. “I know I’ve said it a million times already, but I really do want to thank you all. Put your hands up again...wow. Amazing” A fan near the stage took his chance as she quipped, “I’m not married. Yeah – I’ll marry you” in response, before ending the set with Starry Eyed.
It was the song everyone had been waiting for, and madness ensued, with Goulding encouraging the crowd to sing along. Chants of “Next thing/we’re touching” were no doubt being heard from quite a way outside the tent.
Afterwards, Ellie tweeted of her time at Weston Park: “Best crowd today in ages THANK YOU so much”. It seems the adoration is mutual. Long may it continue.
