The Military Wives are on course to be Christmas number one and is already one of the year's biggest selling singles.

According to midweek figures, Wherever You Are is approaching 400,000 sales after just five days.

The Military Wives were formed on the BBC Two show The Choir and were outselling the rest of the top 20 singles combined earlier this week.

Little Mix and Lou Monte are second and third in the midweek charts with YouTube sensation Alex Day also set for a top five position.

The 22-year-old Essex singer has showcased many tracks online and the success of Forever Yours has surprised many.

The Official Charts Company's managing director Martin Talbot said: "The week before Christmas is always an incredibly competitive sales week, so for Alex to make such a big impact in the top ten without the support of a traditional record label, big or small, is truly impressive. Forever Yours is certainly one of the most successful self-released tracks we have ever seen."

Meanwhile, Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit is in the midweek top ten but unlikely to reach the top spot.

Coldplay, Olly Murs, Lloyd featuring Andre 3000 and Lil Wayne all remain in the midweek top ten ahead of the Sunday's Christmas chart.
