Concert footage of David Bowie from 1973 has been retrieved by a retired British cameraman after it was thought to have been lost.

The footage of Bowie performing Jean Genie on Top of The Pops was thought to have been wiped from the BBC archives soon after it was broadcast, but John Henshall, who was the cameraman behind music videos for the likes of Queen and Blondie, kept a personal copy of the recording for his own archives.

The footage was played for the first time in 38 years at the BFI’s Missing Believed Wiped event.

Talking to BBC news, Henshall said, “I just couldn’t believe that I was the only one with it. I just thought you wouldn’t be mad enough to wipe a tape like that. They’ve been looking for it for years, hoping that someone had it because there was no VHS in those days.
