Drift Away singer Dobie Gray dies aged 69
Dobie Gray Singer and songwriter Dobie Gray, who was best known for his hit Drift Away, has died aged 69.
Gray died in his sleep at home in Nashville on Tuesday following a battle with cancer.
He was responsible for some of the best known pop and country songs, including hits for performers like Ray Charles, Etta James, Julio Iglesias, John Denver and Tammy Wynette.
Gray himself had a number of hits with songs including Loving Arms and The In Crowd, and he frequently appeared in the Top 40 chart.
Gray’s close friend Bud Reneau said, “He had such a unique style, so identifiable. If you listened to his record you knew right away it was him. It was a big factor in his marketability.”
Gray never married and had no children, and much of his legacy was willed to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, and as yet funeral arrangements have not been completed.
