Adele's second album 21 has overtaken Amy Winehouse's Back To Black to become the biggest selling album of the century so far.

According to the Official Charts Company, 21 overtook the late Amy Winehouse's album, reaching 3.4 million album sales.

21 has not dropped out of the UK album chart top ten since its release 45 weeks ago and is currently in fifth spot.

The album has also recently been nominated for six Grammy Awards including Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album.

Adele has recently been recovering from voice surgery and thanked fans on her website: "A couple days after finally being able to talk again I’m pretty speechless.

"This has been the best year as it is but to end 2011 with this incredible achievement and honour is beyond anything I can express.

"Thank you to every single person who has taken a shining to this record, for making it have such an impact, this record has taken on a life of its own thanks to you."

The other Grammy Album of the Year nominees are the Foo Fighters' Wasting Light, Lady Gaga's Born This Way, Bruno Mars' Doo-Wops & Hooligans and Rihanna's Loud.
