Boyzone still have moments where they feel “annihilated” by grief following the death of band member Stephen Gately.

Stephen died of natural causes while on holiday in Majorca with his partner Andrew Cowles in October. His bandmates Ronan Keating, Shane Lynch, Mikey Graham and Keith Duffy were left devastated by his sudden passing, but agreed to release their new album with his vocals on it. He sings on their new single Gave It All Away, but the group admit finding hearing his voice hard.

“It’s different for all of us, and we all have our own way of dealing with it. Right now, it’s not as difficult as it was four weeks ago. It kind of gets easier, but you don’t get over it, you learn how to deal with it,” Keith explained to New! magazine. “And the busier we are, the more opportunity we have for a break from the grieving process, which helps you get better. But then, when you least expect it, a wave of emotion comes over you and completely annihilates you and you cry your eyes out. I was very bad for five weeks after
he passed. I couldn’t see any light at the end of the tunnel. I didn’t feel like the grieving process was progressing. I felt stuck. It’s still difficult. You can focus on what you need to on a day-to-day basis.”

Ronan added they have all found each other’s support invaluable while coming to terms with their loss. They try to talk about Stephen as much as possible, adding they always feels him with them when they are working.

“You realise how short and fragile life is. Our time together is precious now. And we feel Steo is in the room when the four of us are together,” he explained to the publication. “We enjoy talking about him. You try and put one foot in front of the other and try not to think that the world is a terrible place.”
