One in five Queen fans have voted Don’t Stop Me Now as their favourite ever lyric from the legendary band.

The song, which reached number nine in the charts in 1979, was voted the best ever on what would have been Freddie Mercury’s 65th birthday.

The lyrics which won the poll are: “Don’t stop me now, I’m having such a good time, I’m having a ball…” with lyrics from The Show Must Go On second in the list: “My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies, fairy tales of yesterday will grow but never die, I can fly my friends.”

Other notable lyrics in the top ten include these from Bohemian Rhapsody: “Nothing really matters, anyone can see, nothing really matters, nothing really matters to me…” and from Killer Queen: “She's a Killer Queen, gunpowder, gelatine, dynamite with a laser beam, guaranteed to blow your mind, anytime.”

We Are The Champions, Innuendo, Friend Will Be Friends and Stone Cold Crazy all made the top ten Queen lyrics list.

HMV’s Gennaro Costaldo told The Press Association: “Whilst you'd imagine there might be more obvious choices, we shouldn't be too surprised that a lyric from Don't Stop Me Now is a clear favourite among fans - it's such a feel-good, life-affirming song.”

A star-studded charity auction organized by former Queen band members Brian May and Roger Taylor is being held to raise funds for The Mercury Phoenix Trust, a charity set up in memory of the singer.

Celebrities have been encouraged to dress up as Freddie Mercury as part of a campaign ‘Freddie For A Day.’

And Google paid their own tribute with a Google Doodle showing images of the singer on the Google homepage on Monday.
