The charity single for Haiti earthquake victims has stormed to the top of the charts with sales of almost 500,000.

The song, recorded by a line-up of celebrities and orchestrated by Simon Cowell, knocked last week's number one Fireflies by Owl City off the top spot.

The version of REM's Everybody Hurts sold more records in its first week than any other charity single since the turn of the century, the Official Charts Company said

Celebrities and bands including Alexandra Burke, Cheryl Cole, JLS, Kylie Minogue, Leona Lewis, Robbie Williams, Rod Stewart, Susan Boyle and Take That all took part.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said: "For this single to shift the best part of 500,000 copies in just a few days underlines once again the response of the public when called upon to help others in greater need.

"Everybody Hurts is now well placed to generate up to a million sales over the coming weeks, which will not only raise much-needed funds for the stricken people of Haiti, but will also help ensure that their plight is not forgotten.

"It's already the biggest seller of the year so far, and is now likely to go on to be the no.1 single of 2010."
