Lady Gaga Talks Drugs

By on 07/02/2010
Lady Gaga reportedly believes the spirit of her dead aunt lives inside her.

The flamboyant singer has been open about her past experiences with drugs, previously admitting she used to take “bags” of cocaine on her own in an effort to find inspiration for her songs.

A new book has claimed Gaga also used to take LSD, and eventually stopped dabbling with illegal substances as she felt she had to continue the work of her father’s sister, an artist who died at 19.

“I thought I was gonna die,” Lady Gaga: Just Dance – The Biography quotes the star as saying. “I wanted to be the artists I loved, like Sir Mick Jagger and Andy Warhol – and I thought the only way to do it was to live the lifestyle.

“But then I realised my father’s sister Joanne, who’d died at 19, has instilled her spirit in me. She was a painter and a poet – and I had a spiritual vision I had to finish her business. I never met her, but she’s been one of the most important figures in my life.”

Gaga was initially convinced taking drugs would help her be a better musician, but realised she needed to make changes to her life when friends began asking about her habit.

The 23-year-old singer also opened up about the first time she stripped on stage, something she is now well known for doing. She initially took her clothes off in a desperate bid to make people listen to her perform, as she was sick of people chatting through her songs. “That’s when I made a real decision about the kind of pop artist I wanted to be,” she said.
