Alvin and The Chipmunks creator suing over tribute album
Ross Bagdasarian The lawsuit to end all lawsuits has been launched by the owner of the Alvin and The Chipmunks franchise, who has launched action against the makers of a tribute album to the squeaky stars.
Ross Bagdasarian Snr, who created the Chipmunks back in 1958 and has since amassed a fortune of over $1 billion from the franchise, called the album an “artistically inferior knockoff”. What? Of a trio of annoyingly high-pitched critters?
His company are claiming that rival firm Jerry Naylor Company has released the “Tribute to Alvin and The Chipmonks” album which contains almost identical versions of previous Chipmunk “hits”. And yes, they did spell it “monks”.
The lawsuit has been launched despite the company using a different spelling of the name, and previously releasing “Tribute to” albums of the songs of other, more impressive artists including Bruce Springsteen and Ray Charles among others. They had no such issues.
Coincidentally, despite the lack of reaction to either Chipmunk movie, a third instalment is out in December.
