Susan Boyle has an extra reason to celebrate this Christmas - her debut album has been named the highest-selling record of 2009.

The Scottish singer, who shot to fame on reality TV show Britain's Got Talent, topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic with her first offering, I Dreamed a Dream, which has sold more than five million copies worldwide since its release in November.

And now the record has been named Britain's best-selling album of the year just four weeks after its release.

According to the Official Charts Company, Boyle's disc has notched up sales of more than 1.4 million in Britain so far, putting the star ahead of competitors including Lady Gaga, whose own debut, The Fame, has spent 49 weeks in the charts.

Kings of Leon's Only By The Night was third in the best-sellers list, followed by Michael Buble's Crazy Love and the Black Eyed Peas' The End in fourth and fifth place respectively.

Official Charts Company spokesman Martin Talbot says, "In just four weeks Susan Boyle has become the biggest album artist in the U.K. by some margin - an extraordinary achievement for an artist who was totally unknown until April."
