The 31-year-old Maroon 5 frontman has reflected on his younger years for an upcoming episode of MTV show When I was 17. Adam is now an international sex symbol, but he claims things were very different just a few short years ago.

"When I was 17, I was gross," Adam said. "My hair was long and really ratty and nappy. [I wore] huge, oversize flannels that didn't fit [and I had] a goatee. Like a bad version of Ethan Hawke in Reality Bites.”

Hip-hop star Swizz Beatz and comedienne Kathy Griffin also appeared on the show. Kathy discussed her first encounter with a boy’s genitals, while Swizz – who recently married Alicia Keys – talked about sneaking into nightclubs.

"So I go through the front, I get to the door and — 'Show me your ID!' I'm like, 'I don't have no ID. What do you mean, show you my ID? I work here. I'm supposed to be getting the party started.' " Swizz said.

"I was like, 'I'm telling you, I work here!' I'm speaking with so much authority. I'm this little skinny guy. He's looking down on me, like, 'I don't care. Step over here.' "

Adam, Kathy and Swizz’s episode of When I was 17 will air in the US on Saturday.
