Taylor Swift said her new album Speak Now is an open letter to her friends and family.

The US star, 20, will release the new album in October and it will be available for pre-sale at SpeakNow13.com on August 20.

Speaking about the album, she said: "These songs are made up of words I didn't say when the moment was right in front of me. These songs are open letters.

"Each is written with a specific person in mind, telling them what I meant to tell them in person."

Swift has spent two years writing the follow-up to album Fearless and she said it has taken time to get right.

She said: "You gotta give yourself time to live a lot of things so you can write about a lot of things."
