One Direction have been named Artist of the year by MTV.

One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson said the honour was “the icing on the cake” of a brilliant year.

MTV’s team of music staffers chose the British boy band ahead of Taylor Swift, Carly Rae Jepsen and Rihanna.

Meanwhile, One Direction and JLS have joined up to offer the “ultimate boyband” prize.

The two groups, posted a message on the One Direction YouTube channel giving details of the one-off prize.

One winner and four friends will get to spend the day with JLS and have behind-the-scenes access to One Direction.
